Gabapentin is another antiepileptic medication used off-label for AUD . Its on-label indications are seizure and neuropathic pain. AUD patients for which gabapentin should be considered are those with comorbid neuropathy (typically alcoholic neuropathy or even diabetic neuropathy).
Objective: Gabapentin (GBP) and pregabalin (PGB) have been used to treat alcohol use disorder (AUD) and alcohol withdrawal, but with inconsistent results. In this meta-analysis, we explored the effects of GBP/PGB treatment on AUD and their effects on withdrawal, craving, depression, and sleep disturbance in AUD patients.
Although gabapentin has been associated with clinically significant adverse events and frequent misuse, these features do not seem to be relevant in treating AUD.
